"The west half of the north west quarter and the south east quarter of the north west quarter of Section One, in Township Eight of Range Fourteen in the District of ????? formerly subject to sale at Cahaba now Greenville, Alabama containing one hundred and twenty-four acres and sixty-three and a half hundreths of an acre" on 1 November 1858 at Cahaba, Butler County, Alabama.
  • Census1860*: The 1860 Federal Census enumerated him as head of household in 1860 Butler County, Alabama; J Hadges, 65, born abt 1795, South Carolina.
  • Occupation: He was listed in the Alabama 1860 Agricultural and Manufacturing Census, Volume 3, page 79 as having 40 acres of improved land, 200 acres of unimproved land, cash value of farm was $800, value of Farming Implements and Machinery was $150, and value of livestock was $550 at Butler County, Alabama.
  • Note: He in copies from Jeanne Luersen, by Hazel Lucile Sawey Duncan, lists James and Charity Hodges children as Dan, Alfred, Sam, Jim, Henry, David, Martha, Delilah, Sarah, Katie, Matilda and Mary. Also notes that "James Hodges was a traveling circuit judge. He and Charity are buried in Old Burt Cemetery in Halletsville. It is rumored that his picture hangs in a museum in Goliad, TX. but I have not been able to locate it. I would appreciate info on this."
