After leaving Alabama, he came to Goliad, where he served as a trustee of the Paine Female Institute." Colonel John Wiley Hodges was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He was born on 23 April 1801 at Smith County, Tennessee. He married Talitha Ann Morton. Colonel John Wiley Hodges married Susan Lewis Menefee on 7 October 1841. Colonel John Wiley Hodges died on 17 April 1858 at age 56. In the Texas Christian Advocate of June 1, 1858 indicates that Col. Hodges, who had been a member of the Methodist Episcopal church for most of his life, was visiting his daughter, Elizabeth Mary Sutherland and her husband when stricken with illness which lasted for six days before his death.
